~Bubble Bobble
A mini player's guide to a few aspects of the game.
~By Simon Burrows
`NOTE: There are a few words in this mini-guide which are in ' 's
` (eg, 'picking' and 'Baron Von Blubber'). This is for one
` of two reasons :-
`
` a) It's a word I've made up to describe a feature in the game.
`
` b) It's a word that I can't remember whether I have made it up
` or if it's come from the game manual. I can't check this
` out because all the information in this guide was made when
` I played the game on someone else's machine, because I
` don't have the game myself.
~`'PICKINGS'
~`──────────
`Whenever you pop a bubble containing a trapped monster (thus
`finishing them off), the corpse will turn into a 'picking' which
`can then be collected for points. The 'picking' most players
`will get most often is a bunch of bananas. However, this is only
`worth 500 points, so if you're aiming for a high score, you need
`to aim to get the more valuable 'pickings' such as the pineapple.
`To get a higher-value 'picking' you need to pop more than one
`monster-in-a-bubble at the same time. If you pop only one
`monsters-in-a-bubble at the same time, you will only get one
`bunch of bananas. If you pop two at the same time, you will get
`one bunch of bananas and one peach. If you pop three at the same
`time you'll get one bunch of bananas, one peach and one lemon.
`And so on. Each of these pickings has twice the value of the
`previous one. Here's a full list of the 'pickings' :-
`No. of monsters-in-a-bubble Fruit Score
`popped at the same time.
` 1 Bananas 500
` 2 Peach 1000
` 3 Lemon 2000
` 4 Melon Slice 4000
` 5 Purple Grapes 8000
` 6 Pineapple 16000
`This means that if you popped six monsters-in-a-bubble at the
`same time, you'd get one bunch of bananas, one peach, one lemon,
`one slice of melon, one bunch of grapes and one pineapple. That's
`a total score of 31500 compared to the 3000 you'd get if you
`popped each monster-in-a-bubble separately and only got six
`bunches of bananas.
~`'BONUS PICKINGS'
~`────────────────
`Bonus pickings are objects (nearly always food) which appear
`out-of-the-blue at some stage in most levels for no particular
`reason, and only serve to give you points. Although they attract
`players to collect them, most of them are worth hardly anything
`and are not worth spending time collecting. However, some are
`pretty valuable and are worth collecting. Use the below list to
`help you decide which are worthy of collection :-
` Candy Cane - 500
` Fat, Red Lolly - 650
` Bowl of Ice Cream - 800
` Radish - 900
` Ice Cream in Cone - 1000
` Rattle - 1000
` Box of Fries - 1000
` Grey Block - 2000
` Slice of Cake - 2000
` Hamburger - 2000
` Cocktail - 3000
` Mug of Beer - 3000
` Long, Thin, Red Lolly - 3000
` Cherry Bun - 3000
` Purple & White Capsule - 3000
` Red Gem - 5000
` Sugar Crystals - 5000
` Double Blue Note - 5000
` Single Blue Note - 6000
~`'BUBBLES UP'
~`────────────
` Blue sweet - Increases the speed your bubbles fly through the
` air (Only until they lose their capturing-power)
`Purple Sweet - Increases the distance your bubble travel before
` it loses its capturing-power.
`Orange Sweet - Increases the rate of which Bub or Bob can
` generate bubbles.
~`'ELEMENTAL BUBBLES'
~`──────────────────-
~Bubble with flame in:
`When popped, a single flame falls from the bubble. When it lands
`on any floor, it spreads outwards to a maximum of 13 tiny flames.
`If it reaches a wall, the fire is blocked, but if it reaches a
`drop it will fall off the end and then carry on spreading once it
`lands on a platform lower down the level. This fire is lethal to
`any monsters that hit it, and the dead monsters will turn into
`diamonds worth 9000 points each.
~Bubble with lightning-fork in:
`When popped, a fork of lightning flies from the bubble towards
`the edge of the screen. The fork will kill any monsters and can
`go through all walls. When the fork reaches the edge of the
`screen it disappears. The direction that the lightning goes
`depends on which way Bub or Bob is facing when they pop the
`bubble. If you pop the bubble while facing left, the lightning
`flies off to the right, and vice versa. Any monsters the
`lightning kills will turn into diamonds worth 8,000.
~Bubble with water in:
`When a water bubble is popped, the water flows from it and falls
`straight down. When it lands on a platform, it washes along it,
`then falls again at the end of the platform. The water carries
`on falling through the level until it exits at one of the gaps at
`the bottom of the level. Any monsters it hits it washes along
`with it, and when the water reaches the bottom of the screen the
`monsters turn into diamonds worth 7,000 points. If either Bub or
`Bob get caught up in the water, they are washed along in it as
`well, but they are simply deposited back at the top of the screen
`when the water reaches the bottom. The direction the water flows
`depends on which way you are walking when you pop it. If you are
`walking left, the water goes left, and vice versa. If you are
`still and the bubble floats into you from directly underneath, it
`pops and flows straight down.
~``CRUCIFIXES'
~`────────────
~Red Crucifixes:
`If you collect one of these you will stop shooting bubbles and
`start shooting deadly balls of fire. These go straight through
`walls, and kill all monsters on contact. You will lose this
`power if you lose a life, or when you complete the level. Any
`monsters killed by the fire will die and turn into diamonds worth
`9,000 points.
~Blue Crucifixes:
`When you collect one of these, then entire level fills with water
`and all monsters left will die. Then the screen clears of water
`and one diamond is left for each monster killed by the water.
`Each diamond is worth 7,000 points.
~Purple Crucifixes:
`I'm not sure whether you get these on the PC version since I've
`not seen one yet. The only reason I know about it is that I have
`played the Amiga version many times and have seen it on that.
`When you get a purple crucifix, big bolts of lightning shoot in
`from the top-right hand and travel across the screen, through all
`walls, and exit at the bottom-left corner. Any monsters the
`bolts hit are killed instantly. When one bolt of lightning has
`exited the screen, there's a brief gap, then another one comes.
`I think there's about 4 or 5 bolts, then, if you have still not
`killed all the monsters, they stop. Monsters killed by the
`lightening turn into 8,000 point diamonds.
~`'SECRET DOORS'
~`──────────────
`A special feature in this game which only the best players will
`be able to access is the secret doors which appear on levels 20,
`30, 40 and 50. They will only appear if you have not lost a
`single life (yep, that's LIFE, not CREDIT). For example, if you
`did not get hit once on levels 1 to 19, then on level 20 a secret
`door would appear after a few seconds. If you carried on and
`still didn't get hit once throughout levels 21 to 29, you would
`get another secret door in level 30. This carries on until level
`50, when the secret door does something very special.
Here's a run-down of each of the four secret doors :-
~Level 20:
`This door appears below the single block near the top-right of
`the level. If you get to it in time, it takes you to a secret
`room. The room contains 50 diamonds, each of which give you
`10,000 points. You must collect all the diamonds in the top part
`of the level to open the door at the base of the statue. When
`the door's open, go through it, and you'll be taken to the bottom
`part. Get all this diamonds there too, then a second door opens
`and you can rush into that to complete the level. If you take too
`long collecting the diamonds you will be given a 'hurry up'
`message, and if you take much longer after that, 'Baron Von
`Blubber' will start chasing you. If he gets you, you lose a life
`and are then deposited in level 22. If you get all the diamonds
`and escape the room before being hit, you have a huge score and
`also go to level 22.
~Level 30:
`This door appears at the top-left corner of the level. If you
`get to it in time, it takes you to a secret level basically the
`same as the one you get to in level 20. The only difference is
`that instead of falling stars, there are falling forks of
`lightning. (These falling things are entirely for decoration and
`can't be caught). When you complete the level, or if you get
`caught by 'Baron Von Blubber' you are taken to level 32 to
`continue the game.
~Level 40:
`This door appears in the middle of the 2nd highest horizontal of
`the level. Again, it takes you to the same sort of secret room
`with 50 diamonds. The change this time is that the falling
`things are some sort of fiery balls. If you complete the level,
`or if you die, you'll be taken out to level 42 to continue the
`game.
~Level 50:
`You'd have to be an expert to get this far without dying once!!
`The door appears in the middle of the 2nd highest horizontal of
`the level again. If you get to it in time, you are immediately
`taken straight to level 70!!
'EXTRA LIVES'
────────────-
`There are two ways of getting extra lives that I can see. The
`first is by collecting all the letters in the word "EXTEND". The
`other is by reaching certain totals of points. Below is a list
`of all the points-totals which you be awarded an extra life for
`reaching :-
` 50,000
` 300,000
`1,000,000
`2,000,000
`After this, you'll get another extra life for every million
`points you score. (So, one at 3,000,000, one at 4,000,000 etc.)
~I thank you....
